The Kia Niro on sale now at Napleton's Kia of Fishers

The Kia Niro is one of Kia's triple threat vehicles. Before going football-comatose on us, like you would after a big Thanksgiving meal and in the middle of the big game, consider that a triple-threat, according to Webster's dictionary, refers to a football player adept at running, kicking and passing. In other words, not just a pretty face. But we think, in this case, the Kia Niro is quite the looker and capable too.

The Kia Niro is a compact crossover SUV that features four-doors and a hatchback with seating for five passengers. It is available with three forms of power, ranging from a standard hybrid, a plug-in hybrid and a full-blown electric vehicle (EV). The Kia Niro Hybrid is powered by a 1.6-liter 4-cylinder engine + 1.56-kWh Lithium-ion polymer battery. It provides 139 horsepower and 195 lb-ft of torque of combined gas / electric power.

p> Next up is the Kia Niro Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV). It features a 1.6-liter Atkinson-cycle inline 4-cylinder engine producing 104 horsepower and 109 lb-ft of torque with a 44.5 kW motor-generator that combines for a net 139 horsepower and 195 lb-ft of torque.

Finally, there is the Kia Niro Electric Vehicle (EV). Powered by a permanent magnet synchronous motor and a 64 kWh lithium-ion battery pack producing 201 horsepower and 291 lb-ft of torque with an EPA fuel economy equivalency of 123 city/102 highway MPGe (miles-per-gallon equivalent). It has a range of 239 miles.

That's three ways to go green. While the EV can charge on a 120-volt outlet, it does take a while. Switch up to a level 2 - 220-volt charger to cut that time down to about 9.5 hours or to a DC Fast Charger that can achieve an 80-percent charge in about 95 minutes.

What Does The Niro Look Like

  • To some, it's a hatchback. To others, a wagon. The company itself thinks the Niro falls into the Crossover category instead. Regardless, the Niro is what you make it.
  • The design is a tough-looking aggressive and rugged-looking utility vehicle with a simulated skid plate, large black wheel arches, and a revised front end with new LED daytime running lights.
  • New 16- and 18-inch alloy wheels and larger LED taillights add a certain sporty quotient to the Niro.
  • The result is a certain, more pronounced feel than what you would get from any hybrids vehicles that begin with the letter P.

How Does The Niro Look Inside

  • Almost European in appearance, Kia vehicles sport some of the best interiors in the business. Utilizing clean, elegant materials with simple but effective design, Kia designers have managed to craft a cabin with everything you need and nothing you don't.
  • Seating comfort is excellent with controls like the shift lever operated from its normal, expected position. For those who like to pretend they're Formula 1 drivers, they can take advantage of steering-wheel-mounted paddle shift levers to step through the dual-clutch automatic transmission.
  • The Niro now features a redesigned digital instrument gauge cluster with improved graphics and other features that make things more reachable without taking your eyes away from the road. There's a choice of six different colors depending on your "mood" and an open bin with USB and power ports ahead of the shifter position on the console.
  • A 60:40 split-folding seat allows configurable cargo space behind the second row that measures 19.4 cubic feet. Fold the rear seat forward and that area grows to over 54 cubic feet of cargo-hauling space.

What's Included With The Niro?

  • Standard features on the Kia Niro base model feature the LX model trim with a hybrid powertrain. It is standard with a tilt/telescoping steering wheel, keyless entry, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility, an 8-inch touchscreen display with rearview camera, Bluetooth phone connectivity and cruise control.
  • Step up to the LXS model for a complement of driver assists that include automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection,a lane-keep-assist, rear cross-traffic alert blind-spot detection. It's a complete vehicle for not a lot of money.

What's Extra

  • Stepping up to the available Touring trim will find your Kia Niro loaded with more extras like adaptive cruise control, lane follow assist, Kia's UVO telematics system, a ten-way power seat and a power moonroof.
  • The Touring Special Edition steps up with a full-leather interior, a 10.25-inch touchscreen, 18-inch alloy wheels, a voice-activated navigation system and an 8-speaker Harman Kardon audio system.
  • EX-Premium is the Niro's top of the line. With that status comes a host of high-end features, including Qi wireless charging, cooled and heated seats, a heated steering wheel, and rear parking assist.
